James Robert Eggleston |
|
James Robert Eggleston |
James Robert Eggleston
of Deposit
James Robert Eggleston, born July 24, 1958, died October 25, 2023 at the Northeast Center for Special
Care, Lake Katrine, NY. He was the son of Ruth V. Eggleston (Strong) and Harold F. Eggleston.
He is survived by his mother: Ruth Kuhn, of Rotunda West, FL; sister: Janice Mapes (Rick) of Stilesville,
NY; brothers: Jerry Eggleston of Lake Placida, FL, John Eggleston of Saratoga Springs, NY; and his beloved daughter: Erin
E. Eggleston and grandchildren: Saige Rowe and Curtis Rowe of Old Forge, NY. He was “Uncle Jimmy” to many nieces
and nephews.
Jimmy was full of life and a character, and loved to laugh and find the humor in most things. He
was sweet and kind at heart, but could be a rascal with a tough demeanor to most of the world, and didn’t shy from a
fight if it came to that. He had many wild adventures with his pals growing up, including camping and parties in the woods,
riding the roads, and surviving a serious car accident or two and injuries from them.
He loved to fish and hunt, having been brought up with that love of the outdoors. He loved music,
and the '70s and '80s were the high point of Southern Rock, and particularly he loved Bluegrass and Country. He was part of
the Rooney Fest from the beginning and like many in Deposit that was an annual high-point of village life all those years.
Jimmy was a skilled craftsman with a gift in building things from his imagination. He studied plans
and built his own banjo by hand with simple tools, which he self-taught to play. He could play along with and sing his favorite
tunes.
Jimmy faced down his young years of alcohol abuse and went into treatment in 1982, and was committed
to recovery for the remainder of his life. He is credited by many in the community for his compassionate intervention and
unwavering support to those who fought the same battles with alcohol. He abstained from alcohol for the remainder of his life,
and sought out and stood-by those who were struggling with recovery.
He was the proud father of Erin E. Eggleston, born in 1983, with Sherry White, and adored his daughter.
Following a day of hunting with his father Harold in Windsor, NY, in 1985, he drove himself home
and lost control of the car and struck a tree. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, from which he spent the rest of his life
recovering. His personality was intact, but he faced tremendous challenges physically. He lived his best life in facility
care, and was a prominent character in the population of whatever facility to which he transitioned. He suffered a series
of set-backs in the last several months characteristic of the long term prognosis of his brain injury.
Jimmy left us peacefully in the early morning hours of October 25. His daughter Erin had spent the
previous day with him and got the word before her return to his side that morning.
He made his mark on the community he loved in his early life, and the regard and affection of his
many friends has endured all these years later.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 3 at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, 78 Second
St., Deposit, NY, at noon followed by interment at Walton Cemetery, Walton.

for him. He moved to Bradenton, Florida that fall. While attending Manatee Junior College, he began working full-time in the
food industry. Eric approached his career with the same unwavering commitment and tenacity that he had displayed as a young
child. He commenced his professional journey at the Olive Garden and rapidly ascended to a managerial role at Po Folks. His
path then led him to what is now the Breakthru Beverage Company, where he started as a sales manager in the wine division.
Over the span of 25 years, he concluded his illustrious career as the Spirits Division Manager, overseeing the West Coast
of Florida. His dedication and excellence were recognized through numerous awards, including the prestigious Jack Daniels’
Jackademy award for three consecutive years. In addition, his managerial role afforded him the privilege to travel extensively
across the United States, Canada, and Europe, a passion he wholeheartedly shared with his wife.
One of Eric’s most cherished qualities was his ability to forge deep and lasting friendships.
Whether reconnecting with childhood companions or forming connections during his travels, Eric’s radiant warmth and
genuine interest in others had a way of endearing him to everyone he crossed paths with. A simple gesture, like buying a drink,
often transformed into a night of laughter and camaraderie, leaving those in his company feeling like they had just met a
new best friend. His generosity knew no bounds, leaving an imprint of kindness on countless hearts.
Even in the face of a challenging stage four cancer diagnosis, Eric never yielded to despair. With
unwavering strength, determination, and an unyielding will to fight, he confronted the challenge head-on. His medical team
marveled at his indomitable spirit and constant good humor, as he defied the odds at every turn.
As we bid farewell to Eric Lyn Smith, we celebrate a life that was lived with compassion, determination,
and generosity. We will honor his wishes with a Celebration of Life both at the Bradenton Yacht Club, September 9 from 1:00-4:00,
and at the Chestnut Inn on Oquaga Lake, September 30 from 2:00-4:00. The family is requesting no black attire, but casual
wear in shades of blue. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to honor Eric’s
memory. Contributions can be directed to the First United Methodist Church, located at 107 Second Street, Deposit, NY 13754,
a place that held a special significance in Eric’s heart. Your generosity will not only pay tribute to Eric’s
legacy but also make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Gordon Tyler
of Union City, CA
R. Gordon Tyler passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at the age of 88 due to complications of vascular
dementia at his home in Union City, California with his daughter by his side.
He was predeceased by his wife Edith K. Tyler in 2020, and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law
Addie and Theodore Wong, and his grandsons Ethan and Noah Wong.
Gordon was born in Hancock, NY on January 10, 1935. He attended Hancock Central School before joining
the United Sates Army. After finishing his service, he began working for the New York State Department of Transportation
as a surveyor, where he remained until his retirement.
Gordon had many fond memories of growing up in Hancock. He loved being a Boy Scout, camping on Point
Mountain, going to Kandyland for Mr. and Mrs. Pappas’ lime phosphates, and stocking shelves at the Grand Union for a
dollar an hour. His favorite memory, though, was playing the trumpet for the Hancock Central School marching band under the
direction of Roy Wilkinson, whom he described as strict but fair: “the best of the best.” Even as his memory
faded, he spoke very fondly of Mr. Wilkinson and would light up with pride describing how the band would play John Philip
Sousa marches at halftime for football games and form the letter H for Hancock. He later joined the Tomar Mountain Gun
Club, where he was secretary for many years. He adored his Tomar boys and considered them to be family.
After moving to Deposit, Gordon was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Deposit, the
McClure United Methodist Church, the Town of Sanford Board, and the Deposit Historical Society.
Gordon loved telling jokes and stories and made friends everywhere he went. He loved going out to
eat and spending time with his grandsons. He was very proud of his grandsons and was happy that they both joined Boy Scouts
and that Noah wanted to learn the trumpet like Grandpa.
Gordon requested that there not be a funeral. Instead, please remember him by spending time with
a friend, enjoying a cheeseburger or vanilla milkshake, or having an ice-cold beer.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

with Nadine Viviano, Michael Nugent, and was grateful for the loving relationship he had with Lisa Mills.
John’s effervescent spirit was apparent to all

John was not able to endure saving himself, but will be offering the gift of life to many others
in return by donating his organs to those in need. Donations may be made in John’s name to this amazing organization,
Donate Life.
“Tough love” is what John would always say - look it up. “Truth without
love is brutality, and love with truth is hypocrisy.” Lifting each other up without judgement, and always with
love is what we should take away from John’s life story.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service and a private celebration of life will be held
at a later date.
