with his father.
In 1961-2, NYS took their farm for the construction of Rte. 17. In 1962, they

next 39 years of his life. Ronnie and Jean began traveling with Barb and Bob, and Pat and Gunther on annual vacations to Myrtle

time. Spend time in her memory as we will. With her infectious smile and dimples for miles she continues to provide for our
peace of mind.
As an alternative

Phyllis Martin |
|
Phyllis Jean Moore Schaeffer Clark Martin |
Phyllis Martin
On May 13, 2021,
our Planet Earth lost a most extraordinary being. On May 13 2021, our Deposit community lost our medicine woman, wise teacher,
and civic leader. After 80 years of giving service, helping those less fortunate than herself, and building bridges bringing
people together in harmony, Phyllis Jean Moore Schaeffer Clark Martin died in her home in Fort Myers, Florida, leaving the
rest of us to figure life out for ourselves.
Born June 28, 1940
in McClure, NY to Violet Beilby Moore and Harry Moore, the 7th of 12 children. She delighted in knowing that she came from “the Delawares”
and had a great-great grandmother named Two Arrows!
Predeceased by her
beloved siblings, Marion, Maurice, Barbara Joyce, Junior, Alberta, Pauline, Louise, and Doug, she is survived by her loving
sisters Arlene Vandermark, Joyce Smith and Patti Clapper, and loving nieces and nephews.
Her dad worked on
the Decker farms on Route 41. Times were hard and Phyllis remembered a lot of homemade bread and macaroni, and, always a treat
to have meat during hunting season! In elementary school, she had a particular place in her heart for teacher Betty Marks
who, as money was so scarce, bought her a Brownie scout uniform so she could join the local troop.
Graduating from
DHS (1958) , she worked at the Farmers National Bank, (in later years, at Deposit Telephone Co. and NYSEG).
She married Robert
E. Schaeffer of Hancock, NY, and shortly after, the children started coming. Bob built their first house on Route 41, and
then their second, on Old 17. With the help of the family men, the house was completed in just a few short months and became
home to the ever-growing Schaeffer family - her seven children, Robert Edward, Jr. (Cathy), Jeffrey (Rhona), Michael (Ann
Marie), Donald, Douglas (Lisa), Lori (Dan) and Phillip (Amanda), and two more wonderful husbands, Vern Clark and Richard Martin.
That home was often
shared with the occasional teen-aged boy who needed some “other place to stay” for a while. That home was often
the site of fabulous outdoor picnics where one could find an unexpected and always delightful assortment of friends, family,
neighbors and the occasional newcomer, always welcomed and always well-fed as Phyllis was an especially talented cook. These
were the days before “takeout” and each dish was prepared in Phyllis’ kitchen.
Phyllis was passionate
about Deposit and was a fierce voice in her concerns for its children. When her children were young, she led a movement to
have a safe RR crossing on Kenyon Hill Road. In later years, she raised money so that the very first Deposit Pre-School could
include scholarship children along with those whose parents could afford it. She was a den mother, and hard-working supporter
of the Hale Eddy Small Fry football program and their cheerleading coach (still did cartwheels in her 30’s!)
She went on to petition
the School Board for special children’s programming and in later years served on the Board of Education (1984-87, 1990-91)
years which oversaw the building of the new elementary school. She was a particular advocate for the inclusion of a well designed
and well-equipped Art Room at a time when other schools were cutting their curriculum choices. She began to paint when she
was a grandma and was a strong catalyst of the village’s beautification projects.
She taught her adored
grandchildren (Karen, Cory, Jace, Kathryn, Christopher, Danielle, Michael, Thomas, Mariah, Hannah, Olivia, Trevor, Abby, Camden,
Grady, and great-grandkids, Hudson and Scarlett) to catch fish AND clean fish. She taught her kids the importance of raising
the meat that they ate and respecting the animals who gave their lives for their meals. She was completely comfortable in
the woods and was appreciative of the bounty that the lands around her provided for her table - whether deer, or “some
kind of meat” or the magic of her raspberry and strawberry preserves. She taught her kids, and her kids’ friends
the importance of helping elderly neighbors in need, and the pride one could take in a job well done.
When her first husband
was dying, they taught their children and the rest of us how to fill that time with honesty and courage and laughter and tears
all at the same time - a concept that was very rare in the 1970’s. And, then she taught us how to get up and start the
next chapter with strength and new visions. She was still teaching us how to be the best versions of ourselves when time ran
out for her.
From the moment
Phyllis decided that she wanted to spend her last days at home, she was surrounded by a succession of loving family caregivers
- sisters, children and grandchildren, each fortunate enough to have had that sacred time with her. She was never without
the care of someone who loved her deeply. And in the end, with her daughter and granddaughter attending to her, her work here
was done. If you didn’t know her, you missed something spectacular. If you did know her, well...lucky you!
There will be a
private family burial service in June. Because she spent a lifetime feeding other people, it is the family’s wish that
donations honoring Phyllis’ life be made to the Deposit Food Pantry, 91 Second St., Deposit, NY 13754.

Michelle Dezera Murphy |
Michelle D. Murphy
of Deposit
On the morning of
June 24, 2021 heaven gained another angel; and another family a great loss. Michelle Dezera Murphy, only age 38, passed away
that morning peacefully, from congestive heart failure.
Michelle was born
on June 9, 1983 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. Daughter to Rebecka Schmitt (Dennis Lynch) and Michael Schmitt (Tammy).
She married Joseph
Paul Murphy on April 2, 2003 and had a long marriage that lasted 19 years. In that time, they had and raised three children
together, Brooke Murphy, Brittany Murphy and Dameon Murphy. Although she wasn’t her child, she loved Isabella Hubbs
like one of her own. Michelle was the youngest sister of three; her two sisters were Kashawna Bartholomew and Amber Schmitt.
Michelle loved their children as well; her nieces and nephews.
She was a very down
to earth woman who loved being outside, organizing, cleaning and reading books. However, her most joyous moments were being
a mom. It put a big smile on her face. Michelle went to nursing school in Delhi and worked at several nursing homes from Sidney
to Binghamton. She also became a Home Health Aide for countless years; which was her favorite job. Michelle’s most amazing
trait was her desire to help people, no matter what they needed. She is truly missed. “Love you to the Moon and back.”
Funeral Service
for Michelle Dezera Murphy (Schmitt) will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church,
139 Second St., Deposit, followed by a gathering in the social room and then a balloon release.

Raymond James Scott |
|
Raymond James Scott |
Raymond James Scott
(Scottie)
Raymond James Scott
(Scottie) passed from this life to be with God on May 3, 2021 in his “second hometown” of Englewood, Florida.
He was 95 years old. Scottie’s first home was his beloved Oquaga Lake in Deposit, NY where he grew up as the only
child of his innkeeping father and mother.
In 1944, at the
age of 18, Scottie enlisted in the US Army, and trained as a paratrooper in the Philippines in anticipation of the assault
on Japan. Ultimately, he served his enlistment as part of the occupying US force. He returned home and shortly thereafter
met his soulmate and wife of 74 years, Doris. A few years later Scottie became the owner and operator of his family’s
business, Scott’s Oquaga Lake House, a nearly 1000 acre summer resort near Deposit in Broome County, New York.
Hospitality was
in his blood. For over 60 years, Scottie made it his mission to ensure that each guest at Scott’s was active every
day and thoroughly entertained every evening. Scottie’s energy and enthusiasm for this task was legend. From May to
October, seven days a week he provided guests with a plethora of activities, often leading, directing and participating himself.
Volleyball games, tennis, bowling, shuffleboard and bocce tournaments, ski boat rides, waterskiing, nature hikes, canoe excursions,
bus trips to scenic views, painting and dance lessons were likely on the daily schedule. No guests were allowed to be idle.
“Papa Scott” encouraged, cajoled and sometimes subtly coerced their participation.
But Scottie most
enjoyed providing guests with entertainment, especially musical entertainment. He captained the famous Scott’s Showboat
on its late afternoon cruises around the lake, leading the sing-alongs from the helm. He was the bandleader, drummer and often
lead singer for the Lakeshore Four, providing dance music prior to the evening’s scheduled entertainment.
And Scottie was
an exceptional dancer. He and Doris routinely provided guests with memorable dance routines, complete with spins and lifts,
late into their 80s. Guests and family members alike waited for a chance to be his dance partner.
Scottie brought
hundreds of entertainers to the stage of the Scott’s Playhouse and customarily provided his guests with two different
shows each evening. Accordion, harmonica, banjo, guitar and violin virtuosos, magicians, jugglers and trampoline acrobats,
comedians, poets and extemporaneous songwriters not only found a spotlight at Scottie’s invitation, many also found
a lifelong friend.
Scottie also shared
that spotlight. Twice a week he MCed and head-lined a family show of music, dancing and fun. Even at 95 years of age he was
still entertaining friends and neighbors with his harmonica.
Scottie loved America.
He never took freedom for granted, always exercised his right to vote, and grumbled while he paid his taxes, in true American
tradition.
A romantic who got
to live out his love story, he is survived by Doris, his wife of 74 years. He is also survived by his children and their families,
Patty and Gary Holdrege, Peggy and Ron Bowerman, Nancy and Chuck Allen, Linda (Jai) and Jonathan Meyerhoff; son Jimmy, and
Jim (his unofficially adopted son) and Dawn Bombard; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and thousands of guests and
entertainers that he considered family.
A memorial service
was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8 at the Lemon Bay Historical Society Chapel (the Green Street Church), 510 S. Indiana
Avenue, Englewood, FL. The family is planning a celebration of life at Oquaga Lake later this year.
In lieu of flowers
donations in Scottie’s memory may be made to the Deposit (NY) Rescue Squad, PO Box 173, Deposit NY 13754.

Wayne A. Sexton |
Wayne A. Sexton
of Deposit
Wayne A. Sexton,
76, of Deposit, NY went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 11, 2021. Wayne was born on January 14, 1945 and
was raised by Arthur and Vera Beers, of Stilesville, NY. He married Nancy Jacobsen on June 15, 1963 and raised four children.
Family was everything
to Wayne. It didn’t matter the occasion - a birthday, a wedding, hunting, making syrup, or just a Sunday meal - what
mattered was that family was around.
Wayne was the consummate
outdoorsman and was always looking forward to whatever opening day was around the corner. He enjoyed hunting and trapping
and shared his love for this with his children and grandchildren, who carry many stories of spending time with him close to
their hearts. He was also an avid dirt-track and NASCAR racing fan, who always was rooting for “The Intimidator”.
Wayne wore many
different hats - he was a construction worker, logger and did heavy machinery repair. He took great pride in his work, a legacy
that lives on in his children and anyone who worked with Wayne.
He embodied the
motto “work hard, stay humble and be kind”. He took pride in his neighborhood and was quick to lend a hand to
anyone who needed it. Wayne will be remembered in the stories of all who knew him, as a hard-working, steadfast and faithful
father, grandfather and friend.
Wayne was predeceased
by his wife, Nancy, his parents, Arthur and Vera, and brothers: Richard, Gleason and Wilbur.
He is survived by
his children: Dave (Anita) Sexton, Dan (Melissa) Sexton, Jim (Brenda) Sexton and Cherry (Bob) Matthews; 11 grandchildren;
and 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. Surviving also are his sister, Deanna and brother, Tim (Rachel).
During the last
6 months of his life, Wayne never missed the opportunity to share his love for Jesus. It didn’t matter who called or
visited, his message was simple: “Confess your sins and have a relationship with Jesus Christ.”
Wayne is home now,
with his bride of 58 years, dancing on streets of gold. We will miss his presence here but know we will be reunited with him
one day. As were his wishes, a private service will be held at a later date.

Beverly A. Slack
of Windsor
Beverly A. Slack,
79, passed away at home, with family by her side, on Thursday, June 10, 2021.
She worked thirty
years as the lunch manager for the Windsor School District and was the owner and proprietor of The Cradle Furniture
and Gift Shop for nearly forty years.
She is survived
by her husband of 53 years, James S. Slack and her daughter, Tammy Slack (Stacie Conklin), five nieces and nephews, several
cousins and many many dear friends. For the special people who helped her, and her caregiver the last few years, Joanne Rickerson,
she loved you all very much.
Beverly had unconditional
love for her family and had countless friends. She was a second mom to the kids at the high school, paying for lunches
when kids had no money or slipping them an extra cookie when they were having a bad day. Like her dad, she could sell
anything. She could sell “ice to the Eskimos”, we’d say. Mostly though, she donated items from
her shop to people in need and to neighbors across the street from her home.
Beverly enjoyed
traveling to Lancaster to buy things to sell in her shop, going to garage sales and auctions, playing slots at casinos with
her girlfriends, cooking and spending time with her dogs and with those she loved. She knew the value of spending quality
time with people and that life is short and precious. She leaves a huge void in all our hearts and her wonderful spirit
and never-ending optimism will be greatly missed.
Per Beverly’s
request, there will be no services. Online condolences may be made at Osterhoudt Madden Funeral Home website at: www.omaddenfh.com.

Viviano

Anthony Vincent
Viviano, 27, of Deposit, NY passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.
He was predeceased
by his paternal grandparents John & Lorraine Viviano and maternal grandfather James Mills.
Anthony is survived
by his mother, Lisa Mills and her husband Rob; his father, John William Viviano, Jr. and his wife Lila, his siblings John
Viviano III, Lacey Viviano, Jarae Cornwell, and Kasey Fitzsimmons; his grandmother Patricia Mills; many aunts, uncles, nephews
and cousins.
Those fortunate
enough to have met Anthony would often tell him he was ‘an old soul’. He had a caring, understanding and
compassionate nature (for which, he earned the endearing title ‘sweetie man’ from his mama) that was well-balanced
with a youthful yet respectfully-rebellious and just attitude with a hippy-esq, carefree but so very sweetly caring and empathetic
character. He had a passion for making music, playing the guitar, drums and singing. Anthony was the kind of guy who
would give you the shirt off his back, despite said shirt being one of his only three tee’s, that’s still going
strong on a 2 week streak since it’s last seen the inside of a washing machine, soaked in the day’s labor intensive
sweat of a pridefully hard working mason. That is, of course, if you were deemed to be in such a state of need and if
you should find yourself in such a desperate position that you’d be willing to accept such a generous offer. Anthony
focused on the things in life that held deeper meaning, leaving him with a lackadaisical concern for fashion. His father
was not the only one who had made multiple hopeless, lovingly concerned yet failed-attempts to persuade Anthony to put a bit
more time and effort into his appearance, telling him he looked like ’Joe Shit the Ragmin’. Anthony decided
this name was both humorous and well-fitting and he carried this moniker with him into his musical endeavors, which he has
made available for your viewing pleasure on both Facebook and Youtube. He was an honest and hard-working man, who deeply
loved his family and friends. He was happiest being outdoors with his dog Ruth. He was a free spirit, backpacking
across the country several times with only his essentials; his guitar and his dog. He was proud of his work as a stone mason,
and enjoyed riding and working on his Harley Davidson and his firetruck, which he intended to be his future mobile home for
his next planned, more lavish cross-country adventure. He was respected and loved by all in his extended family.
He was a person of great character and strength. He left his family too early, and will be deeply missed by all.
A Memorial Service
will be held on Saturday, June 26 at noon at Hennessey’s Funeral Home, 78 Second St. Deposit.
The family will
receive friends at the Funeral Home on Saturday, June 26 from 10am to noon.
