Hazel
Bonker
Hazel Irene (Schermerhorn)
Bonker
died on October 1, 2014 with her son, Waldo at her side.
She is predeceased
by Donald E. Bonker who died on November 1, 2008.
Hazel is survived
by three children:
Jesse Lee Stacy, AZ, Cynthia LaPier, CA and Donald E. Bonker II, Barbour Brook;
and by many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren from the east coast to
the west.
Hazel was a
licensed practical nurse - an occupation that she took on somewhat later than
most people embrace a career, but she was passionate and excelled at her work,
continuing to support people in need well into her eighties.
Hazel may have
been the oldest
survivor of Cannonsville. Hazel always said that her years in Cannonsville were
her happiest. She loved the countryside, the woods, the rivers and creeks. She
loved the community and the closeness of the residents. She and Don were active
bridge players. They sponsored family meals on Sundays. They hunted together,
they ran the general store together. Hazel was an active member of the Merry
Delvers and she was a Brownie Scout leader. It was probably the saddest day of
her life when she and the family were forced to leave because of the impending
flooding of the valley.
Hazel was loved
and respected by all
those who knew her. She always aspired to be a “lady.” She was also down to
earth, candid, and caring. She wanted to know about the world and travelled
extensively within the United States. She wanted her children to have the best
lives. She wanted them to be strong and independent. She will be missed but her
legacy will remain always.
Condolences and
memories may be sent
online at www.landers fh.com.

Jeffrey
H. C. Dugon
6/9/86 - 8/5/14
Jeffrey Hartwig
Conrad Dugon - far
too young and so full of life it’s hard to believe he could be taken from us.
Perhaps his purpose in life was to affect the lives of others and to make us
all value each precious moment we have together even more. Larger than life,
forever with a smile and a ray of light in any room he entered are the words we
have been hearing and already knew.
Our dear Jeffrey
leaves his father
Thomas Dugon and his partner Aly Roberts of Deposit; his “ma”, Alexis Pleus and
her partner Mitchell Sosnicki of Windsor. Jeffrey always said brothers are the
most important people in life and his brothers: Thomas Dugon III (31),
Jason Dugon (21) and Jonathon Dugon
(18) will love and miss him forever. Jeff was always the glue. He is survived
also by his dear maternal grandmother, Sherry Pleus, maternal
great-grandmother, Shirley Geiwald and paternal grandmother, Marilyn Dugon. He
leaves behind his paternal family, the Korkes, many aunts, uncles, cousins, his
closest friend Chasen Brown and so many dear friends that we could fill this
page if we attempted to list.
If you knew Jeff,
you knew, he could
always make you laugh, he loved his family, he had an enormous heart, he was
emotional and sentimental, he was an artist, a writer, he was talented beyond
words when it came to preparing food, there was not a task or new experience he
would not take on with enthusiasm and vigor, a wrestler and football player who
rallied his teams in high school and college, he was adventurous, outgoing, he
loved to tease people, he loved kids, the outdoors and traveling, he truly
tried to make the best of everything and was about as charismatic as a person
could be. We are hearing from complete strangers how Jeff has helped them
through times of trouble and on their paths to overcoming addiction and are so
grateful knowing his caring nature extended further than we ever realized.
In 2013 Jeff took
comfort in and
gained strength from having Jesus as his Savior and we know he is now in Heaven
orchestrating fantastic feasts and spending time with his infant son who passed
before him.
Our chef, our son,
our brother, our
grandson, our story teller, our friend, our lover of life, we will miss you
forever.
The family received
visitors at the
West Windsor Baptist Church at 166 North Road in West Windsor from 6-8 p.m. on
Saturday, August 9 and again on Sunday, August 10 from 2-3 p.m. A service to
remember Jeff was held at 3 p.m. at the same location. Following the service, a
celebration of Jeffrey’s life was held at the home he grew up in at 2005 Rte.
79, Windsor, NY where a picnic was offered, ashes were scattered, a remembrance
box was buried and a tree was planted all in his honor. Flowers, food or
donations made in his honor are all acceptable means to express your sorrow or
to offer comfort, though nothing more than your love is required. Condolences

Vern L.
Flack
Vern L. Flack, 67, completed his earthly days
on Aug. 17,
2014, at home, in the presence of family.
He was born Dec. 2, 1946, in Oneonta, to Leon and
Bernice
Flack.
Vern fondly
said he had a
Huck Finn childhood on the banks of the West Branch of the Delaware River in
Cannonsville. There he had a four-year paper route, joined the Boy Scouts,
fished the river and attended Sunday school. His elementary years were in
Deposit.
The family moved to Otego in 1964. Vern was
on the high
school rifle team and became quite the conservative political debater in high
school and throughout his life. He maintained close friendships
with many high school friends and
always enjoyed sharing memories and making new ones with them.
On Aug. 24, 1968, he married Christy (Chris) Hall
in Otego.
He was a barber for 20 years, often working six days
and two
nights a week to put his wife through college and to support their family. His
son, Joel lives in Dillon, Colo., Shane and his wife, Tiffaney live in Biscoe,
N.C., with their two sons, Garren and Liam.
Involved in many community organizations, Vern was
a member
of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. His most rewarding outreach was helping when
he saw a need or to lend an ear when that seemed most appropriate. It was always
done with his uncanny way of putting people at ease and regaling them with his
sense of humor.
During the last 20 years, Vern worked in the
insurance business. He appreciated Derek
McMillan, Lewis
Wilson, and most especially, Scott and Rose Smith and all their very giving
employees for their care, concern and hands-on help during his recent illness.
Vern was so thankful for the medical community at
Broome
Oncology and for Dr. Sherwood. His entire network of prayer support and
constant messaging was phenomenal.
His love of
family,
extended family, nieces and nephews was heartfelt. He loved receiving visits
and messages. His church community, personal friends and terrific neighbors
carried his family through these trying days. Larry, Wayne, Carl, Greg and Tom,
you know he loved you and life would have been much less without you sharing in
his.
Predeceased by his sister, Mary (Jill) Brooks of Otego and nephew, Neil Brooks,
he was also the
brother of Curtis Flack of Otego.
Per his wishes,
Vern’s
body was donated to Albany Medical College.
The funeral was at 7 p.m. Friday, August 22, at St.
Matthew’s
Episcopal Church, Unadilla, followed by a reception in the Parish House. Father
Scott Garno and Deacon Roy VanDermark officiated.
In lieu of
flowers, please
perform a specific act of kindness in Vern’s memory expressing God’s gifts of
grace and blessings to those you help.

She was born November 11, 1923 in Hanna City, Illinois, the daughter of
Hazel and Edgar Angle. They migrated to New York during the Great
Depression. Edna married Johnny Lockwood and together they raised five
children. Edna had not been able to
graduate from high school when a teenager so when she was 38 she
returned to take regular classes and graduated from Afton Central School
with her class two years later. Not being satisfied with that
achievement, she went on to the Decker School of Nursing to become an
LPN. But even this was not enough of a challenge for her. Edna then
proceeded to attend BCC and graduated in 1972 with an Associate’s Degree
in Nursing. After trying hospital care, she found her true niche at
Amphenol in the First Aide Department where she worked for many years. There
was never a dull moment in her life but when she found time she wrote a
memoir about growing up during the Great Depression and had it
published. “Remembering Hazel and Ed” was one of the greatest
achievements and satisfactions of her life. Edna
had a deep love and concern for all animals and among many projects to
aid animals she helped friends and strangers to spay and neuter their
pets. Edna was predeceased by her
husband, Johnny and her son, Mickey, also by her granddaughter, Annie
Lockwood and her great-grandson, Cameron Mika. She leaves behind her
remaining children: Eileen Rowe of Afton and her son-in-law Jack Rowe of
Staunton, VA, Wayne Lockwood of New Smyrna, FL, Glenn and Suzanne
Lockwood of Afton and Shawn and Alecia Lockwood of Wadlaey, AL, also 16
grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She leaves behind also
her only remaining sibling Lillian Moore of Deposit; and many, many
relatives and friends. And finally, her constant companion, guardian
angel and soul mate, her beloved dog, Chelsea. Memorial
Services will be held at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, Afton on Wednesday

in Nineveh Presbyterian Cemetery on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The family will

George
R. (Dick) Venizelos
Venizelos, George
R. (Dick)
our Dad passed away on June 11, 2014 due to unforeseen circumstances from a
recent fall at his home. Dad was born in
Lancaster, Pa. and graduated from Reading Senior High School in 1949. He then
attended Syracuse University where he received a B.A. degree with a major in
Political Science and a minor in journalism in 1953.
While attending
Syracuse University
he met his future bride, Helen Fluker , our mother, and married her in 1952.
She predeceased our Dad in 1994. After graduating Syracuse University he joined
the Army and served from 1953-1955 as a military policeman at Fort MacPherson,
Ga.
He started his
professional career
as editor of the weekly Deposit (NY) Courier and monthly Courier Magazine in
1955. He resigned in 1957 to attend Columbia Graduate School of Journalism
where he received his M.S. in 1958 and was given the Robert E. Sherwood
Memorial Award. Dad joined the Binghamton Press in 1958 where he started as a
reporter. As reporter, he worked in all the newspaper’s bureaus and covered all
beats including police, courts, politics, education and city, county and town
governments, and did many investigative stories. In 1965 he became assistant
city editor and in 1967 city editor.
By 1971 Dad became
managing editor
and then in 1977 Editor of the Press & Sun - Bullentin. 1979 he was named
Ombudsman and later became promotion and
marketing director, retiring in 1989. During that time our Dad was a founder,
along with Paul VanSavage and Rob Salamida of the Spiedi Fest in 1983.

Florida for the past 20 years. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a member of many
boards, including United Way, Roberson Museum and Science Center, Family &

Trustees.
In addition he
taught journalism as
an adjunct at Binghamton University as well as volunteering with our Mom as an
usher at the same University.
Dad also gave of
his time working as
an election inspector for Vestal. Our Dad was a busy man, but never too busy to
make time for us and the activities we were involved in. After retirement Dad spent the winter months in Florida, where he
enjoyed the beach and warm weather and teaching his grandchildren how to play
poker. His passion for any Syracuse sports, especially SU basketball, the NY
Mets, Tioga Downs betting on the horses, teaching his grandchildren how to bet
on horses at Saratoga Racetrack and being a contender while playing mini-golf
was what he enjoyed the most. Dad was constantly staying current with the
latest technology trends which included texting and keeping up with his
grandchildren’s Facebook postings.
We say goodbye
to a father who was
generous, never wanting to impose on anyone, an avid seeker of information (as
can be seen by the constant scribbling of notes), and most importantly a role
model for our family. Dad is survived by his
