Gerald Jerry Wayne Frank |

Gerald
“Jerry” Wayne Frank
Gerald “Jerry”
Wayne Frank, 71, a
devoted husband of 49 years and loving father, passed into eternal life with
Our Lord Jesus Christ on May 21, 2016, at his home in Taylor, TX.
Visitation will
be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, May 25 at Providence Funeral Home.
Celebration of
Life Service will be
2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26 at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will follow at
the IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown.
Memorials: In
lieu of flowers, please
consider making a donation to Highway 95 Church of Christ in Taylor, TX, or the
charity of your choice.
Jerry was born
on March 28, 1945 to
Sylvester Everett Frank and Grace Hunt Frank in Bainbridge, NY.
Throughout his life, Jerry knew and appreciated the value of hard work.
He grew up on a dairy farm in Sanford, NY where the typical workday started
well before sunup and lasted until well past sundown. The parents of his future
bride, Judy, purchased the Franks’ dairy farm in the spring of 1961. Later,
Jerry would joke that his marriage to Judy was “a part of the deal.” The two
were married on July 10, 1966, in Deposit, NY.
Jerry and Judy
had their first
child, Dawn Marie, in 1971, followed by Todd Wayne in 1973 and Dixie Mae in
1976. In the fall of 1978, Jerry and Judy decided it was time for a change of
scenery (as Jerry tells it, he was looking for a place where he would never
spend another winter shoveling snow). Jerry and Judy sold their house, bought a
motor home, and took their young family to Round Rock, TX. Having found his
permanent home in TX, Jerry quickly acclimated to the history and traditions of
his adopted state.
Jerry loved all
things mechanical
and had a natural mechanical talent. He restored classic cars, repaired Power
King tractors, worked as a mechanic, and owned several car-related businesses.
Today, Jerry’s son, Todd, is the owner and operator of Jerry’s Garage in Round
Rock, TX
Jerry was a man
of his word, a
family man, and a Christian who loved and honored God, his church, and his
country. When Jerry first came to TX, he joined Round Rock Church of Christ,
where he served as a deacon. Later, after moving to Taylor, Jerry became
a member of Highway 95 Church of Christ, where his deviled eggs were always a
hit at the church luncheons. A true patriot, Jerry prayed for his country and
always made a point to include the men and women who served in the military in
those prayers.
Though we miss
Jerry dearly, it is
only the passing of his earthly body that we mourn. Jerry’s true self, his
spirit, has been taken to his heavenly reward with Our Lord Jesus Christ. For
this reason, we do not truly mourn, for Jerry is not truly gone; rather, we
rejoice in celebration of his new eternal life.
Survivors: wife,
Judith Hamlin
Frank; sister: Bonnie Frank Hrehor of Binghamton, NY; children: Dawn Frank
Hearn and husband Andrew Hearn of Georgetown, TX, Todd Wayne Frank of Round
Rock, TX, and Dixie Mae Frank of Colorado Springs, CO; grandson: Nicholas Todd
Frank of Pflugerville, TX; a host of relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Richard William Gifford, Sr.
Richard William
Gifford Sr., 87, of China Road, Deposit, died Friday, May 27, 2016 at Wilson
Hospital in Johnson City. He was born October 15, 1928 in Deposit, NY and was
the son of the late William E. Gifford and Elizabeth Meyer Gifford. For most of
his life he was also the loving step-son of Grace Gifford.
Mr. Gifford graduated from Deposit
Central School in 1946. As would become a family tradition, he excelled at
cattle judging and showing. One of his proudest moments was being chosen as
herdsman for Elsie, the Borden cow in Chicago. His first job off the farm was
on the construction of Deposit High School. He worked for Ed Hartz and Sons and
Alex Zaczek Construction, but most of his life was spent as an outstanding
Delaware County farmer. He moved to the Laurel Bank Farm in 1960, had a good
eye for cattle, was successful and diligent with his crops, and many people
remember buying sweet corn from his farm stand on Laurel Bank Avenue. He first
started when corn sold for 50 cents a dozen. He was a past member of Deposit
Fire Department, Farm Bureau and Eastern Milk Producers. Dick was the last
surviving founding member of the McCabe Hollow Sportsman Club.
He is survived by his four children
and their spouses: Stephen and Pam Gifford of Escalon, CA, Denise and Rick
Smith of Deposit, Gary and Jenni Gifford of Endwell, and Dick and Michele
Gifford of Deposit. Dick is also survived by his brother and best friend: Clayt
(and Sandra) Gifford of Sherman, PA; and three devoted sisters and
brothers-in-law: Judy and Dick Robertson of Trumansburg, NY, Cathy and Dave
Johnson of Unadilla, NY, and Patsy Gifford of Groton, NY. His loving and
dedicated companion of the last several years, Rita Haskins of Deposit, also
survives him. Dick leaves behind many caring grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and the numerous
special and helpful people from his life.

Peter A. Hess |

Peter
A. Hess
Peter, aka TOM
(The Old Man), died
in the last minutes of Saturday, January 16, 2016.
Peter was a cool
guy. He was a fan
all kinds of beer, and was even fond of a little vodka from time to time (or
was that the other way around?) He liked Vienna sausages, sardines, clams, cup
o’ noodles and Italian subs, but not necessarily in that order. He enjoyed
fixing and collecting cameras, had a lifelong love affair with VW and
Mercedes-Benz vehicles, shooting firearms (which he must have been good at as a
member of the U.S. Army shooting team in Germany), and just plain old tinkering
with things in the ultimate tinkerer’s workshop.
We can still
see him relaxing on the
screen porch at the lake, saying “It’s as still as a mill pond out there”, enjoying
a cold beer. He was also a good person, showing through his actions what
unconditional love really is. He was always accepting and never judging -
always there for you in a pinch, no questions asked. He would fascinate you
with tidbits of trivia that just couldn’t be true, but were (did you know there
is a place in Canada is further south than Binghamton?), prompting many a smart
phone check.
Just as you thought
you knew
everything about him, he would surprise you. Peter always had a natural way with
the ladies, and had many loves in his life. Some of his greatest were his two
wives (yes, he married them one at a time!) Shirley Hess, Sue Sadlon, and his
long time girlfriend Debbie Simmons.
So, The Old Man
is on to the next
journey without us, and I’m sure when we see him again he’ll let us know where
the party is, and have some unbelievable fact for us to ponder.
He left his wisdom
and humor to his
three boys: Malcolm Hess and his partner Patty Yenik, Peter B. Hess and his
wife Seane Bennett, and Matthew Hess; his grandson: Peter C. Hess and his
partner Noelle Dalfonso; and his great-grandson: Peter D. Hess.
With any luck,
in 440 years, there
will be a Peter Z., and they will still talk about the original, Peter A., The
Old Man.
We hosted a celebration
for Peter at
the Vestal American Legion lounge from 4-6 on Saturday, January 23. We raised a
glass, shared stories and hugs to honor this truly great human being.
Mr. Hess was
a former Deposit

James L Mills |
|
James L. Mills
James L. Mills,
74, of Walton passed
away unexpectedly Saturday, June 11, at the home on Lower Third Brook Road that
he and his wife, Janice, had shared since 1963.
The little
house changed and grew over the years, through Jim’s own sweat and toil, from
humble beginnings to a tidy homeplace. He and Janice raised two sons there, and
in the adjacent garage Jim repaired or restored more cars and trucks than even
he could remember.
Jim was born
May 9, 1942, in
Sanford, NY, the sixth of Wesley and Mary (Sterling) Mills’ 10 children. The
family lived in Rock Rift and McClure before eventually settling in Walton in a
house on Munn Street. Jim graduated from Walton High in 1960, and he married
Janice Barnes of Sidney on September 28, 1963.
Jim was a self-made
man blessed with
an inquisitive, clever mind and rugged, skillful hands. He grew up poor and
learned to cope. If he needed something and didn’t have it, then he built it
himself with whatever he could find. He was a self-taught carpenter, plumber
and electrician, a man who could do almost anything he put his mind to.
He was strong
and tough, a devoted
husband and father. He loved bad jokes and good diners, black coffee and green
grass, the woods where he hunted and the waters where he fished.
He was a mechanic
at the Walton
Central School bus garage for 14 years. His knowledge and skills led to his next
job as a bus inspector for the New York State Dept. Of Transportation. He
retired from the DOT as the Region 2 Supervisor in 2001.
In retirement,
he restored antique
automobiles in his free time. He loved Mopar muscle cars, and over the years
his garage was home to several projects – including Plymouth Barracuda, Fury
and GTX models, a Dodge Challenger and even a Dodge Rampage.
Jim’s favorite
was a red 1967 GTX
with a big-block V-8 and a four-speed transmission, similar to the first
brand-new car he ever bought. He was a frequent winner at car shows, although
he didn’t give a hoot about trophies.
He liked talking
to people, and he
eagerly shared his knowledge and know-how with the many friends and
acquaintances he made in his lifetime. He was always willing pitch in and help
people with any kind of project, big or small.
Jim is survived
by his loving
family, his wife of 52 years: Janice; two sons: Jeffery and Kim Mills of
Greensboro, NC, and Joseph and Erin Mills of Apex, NC; grandchildren: Hannah,
Caleb and Griffin; sisters: Helen Weidhaas of TN, Martha and Robert Wetzel of
FL, Joan and Marty Whelan of VA, Lila and Alleyn Rossomando of AZ and one
brother: Robert Mills of FL; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Betty Mills of
Champlain, Delores and Ed Wilson, Joyce Barnes, Eddie and Mary Barnes, and Dick
Barnes, all of Sidney, and Barbara Cawley and her fiance Roger Schmidt of
Bainbridge; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends: Chris
Voorhies, Hazzie and Sue Quick and Buddy Gibson; and good neighbor: Jack
Alvarez.
Jim was predeceased
by his parents;
a brother, David; sisters Lois Harris, Jean Decker and Ruth Helmer;
brothers-in-law, Don Weidhaas, Milton “Barney” Barnes and Ray Cawley; and a
sister-in-law, Pat Barnes.
An informal,
drop-in celebration of
Jim’s life was held at his home Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Per Jim’s
wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Arrangements are with Courtney
Funeral Home, Walton.
Memorial contributions
in Jim’s
memory may be made to Walton EMS, 61 West St., Walton, NY 13856, as a thank you
for their exceptional efforts. Condolences to the family may be made online by
visiting www.courtneyfh.com.

Audrey
Orr
Audrey Orr, 85,
went home to Christ
on February 2, 2016 in Kennewick, WA. Born Audrey Bennett Hartz on February 13,
1930 in Deposit, NY, she was the fourth of five children born to Albert and
Ruth Hartz.
Audrey graduated
from Deposit High
School in 1947. Audrey then attended nursing school and became a lab technician
in St. Louis, MO where she met the love of her life, Robert Orr after a USO
dance. He was soon deployed overseas but they continued their romance writing
letters for four years.
Immediately after leaving the Air Force, Bob traveled to Deposit, and married
Audrey on January 26, 1952. They were happily married for 59 years.
They moved to
ID where as a
newlywed, Audrey helped take care of Bob’s ailing parents and started her own
family. They moved to Kennewick, WA in 1962. Both were very active with their
five children and church. Audrey especially loved ushering, the United
Methodist Women, helping with Vacation Bible School and other caring
ministries, including four summers as a camp counselor for handicapped kids.
Audrey and Bob
picked up one of
their biggest passions when they took their first square dance lesson as a way
to meet people after moving to Kennewick, WA. This turned into a pastime that
they loved and the two became extremely proficient square and round dancers.
When asked to help with leadership duties in the Prairie Shufflers Square Dance
Club, they jumped in with both feet, eventually serving at the club, council,
state, and national levels. In 1978, Audrey and Bob received the prestigious Harry
MacGreagor Award, which is awarded yearly to one dancer or couple in the state.
Then in 1987, Audrey became the first female president of the Washington State
Square Dance and Folk Dance Federation in its 40-year history.
After her youngest
child started
school, Audrey found her true calling - working with kids. She joined the
Richland School District as an aide to a special education class. She poured
herself into the lives of special needs children for 28 years until she retired
in 1990. Even after retirement she wanted to help children, becoming a Guardian
ad Litem and in more recent years becoming a volunteer aide in her daughter’s
kindergarten and first grade classrooms.
She was a loving
wife, mother,
grandmother and advocate for those who needed help. With her compassion, wicked
sense of humor and infectious laugh, Audrey touched thousands over the years
and will truly be missed.
She was preceded
in death by her
loving husband, Robert, her sons Michael and Russell and her daughter
Katherine.
She is survived
by her daughter
Colleen Kopf and son James, as well as her loving sons and daughters-in-law; 10
grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 27 at 4:30 p.m. at West
Highlands United Methodist Church, 17 S Union St, Kennewick, WA 99336. The
