Christine was born December 22, 1947 in Queens, NY, the daughter of Alexander Pitkiewicz and Florence Kosior.

She was a woman who was constantly found with a smile upon her face.  She was always positive and upbeat no matter what obstacles were presented in her life.  Anyone who had the pleasuring of meeting Christine knew how much she loved her “babies", meaning the several precious kitties that she referred to as her only children. Christine was also a master of art when it came to coloring. She was typically found carrying around her coloring book which was full of intricate designs; each page was colored brightly and beautifully with great detail. It was a treasure which Christine enjoyed sharing with others. She enjoyed socializing with her friends and family, dining out at the Italian restaurant around the corner from her home. She was always impeccably dressed with matching jewelry and beautifully painted fingernails.

She was indeed a beautiful soul inside and out. Christine loved and missed her husband dearly. May all who loved her find peace in knowing that she and Paul are now reunited in heaven.

Iva May Bowen

Iva May Bowen

Iva May Bowen

of Deposit, NY

Iva May Bowen quietly passed through the gates of Heaven on the Monday morning of April 6, 2020. Upon her arrival, she was met by her sons, Walter (Scott) and Stacy (her infant), her brothers, Sidney, Albert, and Russell, and her parents, Olive (Garrison) and Riverous Criddle.

Iva was the matriarch of an incredible and extensive family. She leaves behind her son, Steve, his wife, Ruth, and their four children, Christie (Glenn) Johansen, Schayne (Nicole), Tiffany (Dan) Miller, and Corinne (Shawn) Mills, and Steve’s grandchildren, Monica (Rodney) Spillane, Caitlin, Ian, Aubrey, Schayne, Alexa, Dyllan, Kayla, Collin, Shayna, and great-grandchild, Harvey; her daughter, Cindy, and her loyal champion, Niki; her daughter, Becky (Jim) Tyson, their son Justin, and their granddaughter, Chloe; her daughter, Colleen (Bill) Harrison, and their children, Todd (Lynn), Holly, Kyle (Lisa), Lauren (Caleb) Smith, and Will and their grandchildren, Cassidy, Isabel, Paige, Melina, Ella, Juliet, and Noelle; and her daughter, Claire (Matt) Congdon, and their children, Justine, Scott (Nikki), Taelor, Nick, Jordan, and Jobe, and a soon-to-be grandson, Lincoln.

Iva, with her fiery red hair, held a passion for life. She graduated Valedictorian of her class from a little white schoolhouse in Thompson, PA. Iva was brilliant and loved to learn. There wasn’t an instrument that she couldn’t play or a card game she couldn’t master. Her talents of singing, playing the accordion, and dancing made her the life of the party. Her smile would light up the room, and she made everyone feel like they were special.

Besides her own children, Iva leaves behind a legacy of nurturing many hearts and souls throughout her life. Growing up during the depression, Iva learned young how to stretch her food budget to feed many. And that she did. She always had a container of chocolate chip cookies, a big crock of soup, and fresh bread to share. Her cooking was known throughout her neighborhood and would draw many people to her table. Her table was always filled with a game of cards and lots of socializing. She worked extremely hard to support her family. Learning how to drive a forklift, she worked side-by-side with the men at the industrial plant, Celotex. They never doubted her ability to get the job done. When she could no longer handle the physicality of the job, she hung up her hard hat and started working at the Victory Market. She loved being able to see and visit with all the shoppers. She always made time for every customer.

Iva had many loves in her life. Although none could compare to her children, Iva spent the last years of her life with Harold Karcher. Harold and Iva had many adventures, from casinos to Syracuse basketball and football games, to train rides. Iva felt very blessed to have spent her final years with Harold and his beautiful family. She treasured their memories.

Only Iva’s family was able to say good-bye to her April 11 on Saturday 11:00am at Evergreen Cemetery. Her family will have a celebration of her life at a later date. Arrangements by Hennessey's Funeral Home, Inc.

Steven Lee Bowen

Steven Lee Bowen

Steven Lee Bowen

Steven Lee Bowen, of Deposit, gently fell into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2020. When walking through those pearly gates, he was met by his brother Scott, his Mother Iva, his Father Walt and many of his best friends he held so dear in life.

On February 13, 1971 Steve married the love of his life Ruth (Fowler) Bowen. Together they created an extremely close-knit loving family. Steve leaves behind his lovie Ruth and their four children: Christie (Glenn) Johansen, Schayne, Tiffany (Dan) Miller, and Corinne (Shawn) Mills. Grandchildren: Monica (Rodney) Spillane, Caitlin, Ian, Aubrie, Schayne, Alexa, Dyllan, Kayla, Collin and Shayna. Great grandchildren: Harvey and Sophie (who will make her appearance in February). Steve also leaves behind four sisters: Cindy Little, Becky (Jim) Tyson, Colleen (Bill) Harrison, and Claire (Matt) Congdon.

Steve the first child of Walt and Iva, was born on September 3, 1951. Steve created his own rules in life living it to his fullest with wild and fun experiences. Steve was quick to smile, tell a joke, dance and had a way of making anyone smile. Steve thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing and insisted on playing the music so loud on the biggest speakers he could buy so the village could hear.  Steve’s children remember many Sunday mornings waking up to that loud music playing and his children are avid music lovers because of that.

Steve was referred to as the animal whisperer by his siblings while growing up on their farm in Sherman, Pennsylvania. His love for horses was portrayed by Steve’s natural ability to tame any wild horse with his natural born gift. Steve would disappear for hours at a time roaming Sherman’s countryside escaping life on his horses daily.

Steve made his living and provided for his family as a Carpenter. Steve had an extreme work ethic and his hands displayed how he worked until they bled, sacrificing unselfishly to keep his family fed.

Steve loved his family ferociously. His children and his wife were his whole life. Steve has left a hole in his family’s hearts.

As Steve lived his life so wildly, his family believes he is on a wild Stallion running through beautiful fields in heaven for ever more.

Robert D. Briggs

Robert D. Briggs, 89, of Afton, died Sunday, July 5, 2020. He was born in Sherman, PA on October 13, 1930, the son of Milton and Ida (Conklin) Briggs.

He was pre-deceased by his parents; his sister, Phyllis Buck; an infant son, James; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Briggs.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Anne Feehan Briggs, and his six children: Elizabeth (Kelly), Michael (Sharlene), Richard, Laurie (Jessica), William (Candy) and Brian (Tammy); 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild, and many other family members, friends and neighbors.

He began his education in a two-room schoolhouse in Sherman and moved to Deposit with his family at age 9. He graduated from Deposit Central School in 1947 and attended SUNY Delhi before returning to Deposit. He worked at the creamery and a printing company before he was a dairy farmer for more than 50 years.

After moving to Afton in 1961, he and Anne started Bobany Farms, which was awarded the Dairy of Distinction for more than 20 years, recognizing family farms in NY which were maintained to specific standards of performance and appearance. He was rightfully proud of the farm and those awards. They operated the farm for 47 years.

He was a member of the Coventry Milk Producers Co-op. He was a beloved member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Afton. From 1971 through 1985, he was a member of the school board for Afton Central School, serving for many years as board president. After leaving the board, he entered politics and was the Town of Afton Supervisor for 24 years, including serving as the head of the Chenango County Board of Supervisors. The Afton Town Hall bears his name, in honor of his dedication and service.

He was also an active member of the Afton Sertoma Club. He received their Service to Mankind award in 2005. He volunteered for the Afton Historical Society and at the Afton InterChurch food pantry. In 2018, he was recognized as the Afton Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

He deeply loved his wife Anne, followed by his kids, grandchildren, horses, education, the town of Afton, farming, the Amish, friends, church and mowing the lawn - in no particular order. He was extremely proud of his family and derived great pleasure from talking with everyone about their careers and accomplishments. He was a man of integrity and honesty, understood the importance of community service, was a champion for education, and always maintained - and expected - the highest of standards for behavior and performance. If he shook your hand or gave you his word, you could count on him doing exactly what he had promised.

Because of their support of public education, he and Anne created the Robert and Anne Briggs Family Scholarship for students graduating from Afton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor. Donations may be made out to Afton Central School, 29 Academy Street, Afton, NY 13730, noting the Briggs scholarship.

Margaret Briggs, 92, of Deposit passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020, at home surrounded by her loving family, after suffering for years with Alzheimer’s disease. She is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Dewey Briggs. Her life was also blessed with fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret’s desire to live in her home until the end of her life was made possible through the love, devotion and care-giving of her former son-in-law, awesome Bobby Lawson. Towards the end, when she knew little else, she knew Bobby was her rock. The family is in his debt and will be forever grateful to him. We also want to acknowledge our appreciation of Hospice and the support and care they provided.

Margaret devoted her life to family and, along with Dewey, the operation of the family farm. It is a marvel what she was able to accomplish all the responsibilities she carried every day. Dewey and Margaret’s home and farm were a hub of activity and warmth. The entire family and many friends have fond memories of the time they spent on the farm. Margaret was proud to identify herself as a farmer’s wife until Boscov’s opened in 1984 and she went to work there as a sales clerk. She loved working in Boscov’s and happily did so until family convinced her it was time to retire at age 75.

Margaret loved the Lord, served him faithfully and worshipped in Deposit’s First Baptist Church. She served as treasurer for a number of years, was a member of the choir and also the women’s group. She always enjoyed working with the other ladies of the church for their big fund-raiser - the Thanksgiving pie sale, baking the entire day before going home and baking for her own Thanksgiving dinner.

Margaret was a skilled seamstress, an incredible baker and an avid gardener. She instilled a love of flower gardens and an appreciation of homemade desserts in all her children. She will be remembered always for her radiant beauty, grace, strong will, and the love she showered on her dear ones.

Due to covid-19, the service and interment on September 11 was private at Oakwood Cemetery in Stilesville. Flowers or donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or Hospice (Healthcare.ascension.org) would be appreciated. Arrangements were through the Hennessey Funeral Home in Deposit.

Benjamin John Colwell

Formerly of Windsor

Benjamin John Colwell was born on May 14, 1979. He was taken into the arms of His loving Savior on May 20, 2020 after a non-COVID-19 related, serious illness. He was loved by so many and was known for his contagious smile and infectious joking.

Ben, we joke, was born with camera gear in hand and ready to cover the newest and greatest story or life experience. He loved taking pictures and touring different parts of the U.S. Ben, as a young boy would make a news cast and pretend to broadcast from his living room. He quickly learned all about computers, editing, videography and more photography. He was hired by 34 News and WBNG TV-12 in Binghamton, NY after creating a piece on Snow Geese. He then moved into bigger stations throughout Florida and Arizona.

Ben learned his love of recording and editing from working hours at his church and soon moved to a larger church to work with technology upgrades on their computers, sound and broadcasting equipment.

Ben is survived by his dad, LeWayne, his mother Susan, who passed away on May 27, 2020, and was predeceased by a nephew Tyler Daniel, also survived by his three siblings: Tim (Gwendy) Colwell, Rebecca (James) Mitchell, Dan (Lorina) Colwell. He had many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Ben.

Ben was a great friend to so many people. The impact he made will last for years to come. He will be greatly missed by his WINK news family in Fort Meyers, Florida where he was currently employed as their Chief Videographer. It was his dream job for the last several years.

Memorial Services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be in S. Windsor Cemetery. Sue was my wonderful wife for 49 ½ years. She was a great mother to our four wonderful children. She home-school taught our children and some of our grandchildren. She loved her family and passed away in her sleep with a heart attack caused by a broken heart from the loss of our youngest son one week earlier. Sue was a great prayer warrior who spent hours praying for many, some she may of only met once. She was a very giving Proverbs 31 wife.

Because of her physical troubles, she was very limited what she could do. She spent many hours knitting prayer shawls, lap blankets and baby blankets. She was making a baby blanket for great-grandchild number 5, due in the Fall, while we were in Florida with Ben, when he took ill.

She was a great Christ like example to all our family and others. She was my support and encouragement in every endeavor. Jeanne B Fletcher

Jeanne (Boyer) Fletcher

of Clifton Park, NY

Jeanne B. Fletcher, 86, of Clifton Park, NY, died peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. She was born in Binghamton, NY on March 1, 1934 to the late Walter and Elvena Boyer of Deposit, NY.

She is survived by a cousin, Donald I. Lee (Mary) of Accord, NY and extended family members:  Deborah, Andrew, Michael, John and their children.

Jeanne received a BS at Marywood University and a MA at the College of St. Rose. She gave lectures at various times, volunteered at the Pyramid Life Center, and at church functions.  Jeanne was selected to be in a volume of "Women of the Year" based on her many contributions.

She lived in Albany and Clifton Park for 55 years. She taught first grade for over 40 years in the Port Jefferson and South Colonie Central School Districts, and was a substitute speech teacher for many years at Shenandoah Central Schools. She mentored many student teachers over the course of her career. Jeanne was a most gifted and caring teacher.

Children who came under her tutelage received the best education in all ways that a child could receive. Even after her retirement she would reach out to children while going about her daily schedule. While she was at the Saratoga Nursing Home, children who were visiting loved ones would sometimes be drawn to Jeanne and enjoyed a wonderful connection. The children would often seek out Jeanne on their next visit.

Jeanne traveled to over 27 countries in her lifetime. She would alternate summers between vacations and mission trips. One summer she would go on a vacation to some destination. The following summer, she would journey on a mission trip to a country where people were in a great need of goods. Her favorite mission trip was always to Haiti. She claimed the needs of the Haitians were extreme and their appreciation for the materials provided by the mission group was heartwarming.

She was an avid reader. Jeanne took on the challenge of reading all the Nobel Prize in Literature books, seeking them out - sometimes in the rare book section of libraries. She enjoyed gardening and birds - especially humming birds and cardinals.

Jeanne was loved and well-respected by family, friends, and colleagues. Donations in her name may be sent to Pyramid Life Center, 1 Pyramid Road, Paradox, NY 12858.

Arrangements are attended to by Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Inc., Deposit. A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date.

Thomas Sidney Hynes

Thomas Sidney Hynes, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on March 20, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving wife, other family members and dedicated first responders at the time of his passing.

Tom was born on May 30, 1939, in Brooklyn, to Mary Theresa Mullins and James R. Hynes.

He graduated from Draper Central School in 1958.

After completing a degree in mortuary science, Tom embarked on an almost 60-year career as a funeral director.

Tom owned and operated Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury and Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville. Through this vocation, he was able to do what he cared most about, helping other people.

Tom was a gentle and heartwarming soul who provided support to thousands of families when they needed it most.

His community involvement included years of service with Roxbury Rotary Club, Roxbury Fire Department, driving bus for the Roxbury School District and coaching various youth teams in the area.

Tom was also on the board of directors at Kirkside Assisted Living Center, Margaretville Memorial Hospital and Catskill Watershed Corporation. Again, Tom was in his element helping other people and organizations achieve their goals.

In keeping with this spirit of service to others, Tom entered the political arena. He was a devoted supervisor in the Town of Roxbury for 36 years. Ultimately, he tried to solve problems by working with all interested parties.

There are far too many projects that he was involved in to list here. However, the measure of his success and what he would be most proud of centers around the fine folks of Roxbury and Grand Gorge electing him as their supervisor for almost 40 years. This vote of confidence kept him persevering year after year.

Tom was also a dedicated member of the Delaware County Board of Supervisors. His peers respected Tom as a politician who would cross party lines to resolve an issue if the other side had a better solution.

Although his work schedule kept him busy, Tom always found time to watch his family members participate in sporting events, school plays or, for that matter any activity they were involved in. His genuine joy in seeing them succeed cannot be overstated.

Tom was also an avid golfer and golf club aficionado. His playing partners would comment that he had a new set of driving woods each season. In addition, Tom enjoyed watching his favorite team, the New York Yankees, during the baseball season.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his childhood sweetheart and adoring wife of 59 years: Mary Hynes; children: Jerry and wife, Robin Hynes, Tim and wife, Teresa Hynes, Mike and Kelli Hynes, Chris and wife, Tanjia Hynes; grandchildren: Meghan and husband, Ryan Cole, Tyler, Emma, MacKenzie and Addy; and great-grandchildren: Jackson, Scarlett and Madeleine. Tom is also survived by his brother: Frank Hynes; and sisters: Louise Liberty and Jean McPhail.

The family is planning a small, private service at this time out of concern for the coronavirus pandemic. However, the family looks forward to celebrating Tom's life with extended family members and all his friends at a later date.

The Hynes family requests that memorial donations made in Tom's name be sent to Roxbury ambulance squad.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Catherine Jean Johnson
johnson_cathy.jpg
Catherine Jean Johnson

Catherine Jean Johnson

Catherine Jean Johnson, 73, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2020 in her precious “Sweet House” on Covered Bridge Road in Unadilla, NY.

She was born on August 2, 1946 in Deposit, the daughter of William and Grace (Wagner) Gifford.  She graduated from Deposit Central School in 1964 and completed three years at Brockport State University, majoring in Physical Education.

Cathy married her forever love, David Johnson, on June 24, 1967 in Deposit, NY. They shared 52 years together, most of it farming in Unadilla and raising their seven children. She was instrumental in the development of the “Joleanna Holsteins” registered herd and the formation of “Covered Bridge Farm Market”, both of which are now carried on by two of her sons and their families.

In her gardens, Cathy cultivated endless flowers, vegetables, and memories. She had an appreciation for the fertile ground and beauty that swept the landscape with each changing season as she tilled the soil, sowed the seeds, pulled the weeds, and harvested a bounty of produce. She took pride in her well-tended blooms in her flower beds, and the freezers and jars full of vegetables and preserves that resulted from her family’s efforts. We know she will enjoy the peace and fulfillment of praying in God’s gardens. With each turn of the plow and bouquet on the kitchen table, we will remember her.

Cathy’s kitchen was the heart of her home. Family meals were important to her and always prepared with homegrown ingredients. It was around the supper table that “thanks” were offered for the blessings of farm, family and the day’s events were recapped or future plans discussed.

She often invited family and friends for dinner, coffee, or pie.  Cathy and Dave (Grammie and Gramps) hosted larger holiday celebrations with their seven children, spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their “Gathering Room”, an addition to their home that comfortably seats 50 people. As of the year 2019, Thanksgiving dinner attendance was over 40.

She loved cooking for large groups and was devoted to organizing her church family work bees prior to fundraising dinners. Her cooking brought nourishment, fellowship and fun and truly was what she saw as a way she could help bring people together.

As she called herself, a “Red Barn Woman”, a great deal of Cathy’s pride lived in the barns at Joleanna Holsteins. Her love for the Registered Holstein cow was in her blood and she passed that love down to her children.  Whether they were at a County Fair, State Fair, a National Show, or just practicing in circles around the driveway, Cathy was there, being their number one fan, the encouraging coach, and keen judge. There is no doubt she loved the Holstein cow, but even greater was her pride in seeing her children carry on that tradition.

Cathy will be remembered by many as a staunch supporter of Agriculture and the dairy industry. For over 40 years, she annually hosted many kindergarten classes to her farmstand to educate them about vegetables, their value, and how they grow. She also was the proud mother of three Delaware County Dairy Princesses and one New York State Dairy Princess.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Dave; mother, Grace Gifford of Oneonta; and seven children and their families:  Shari Johnson-Ploutz (Fred), Justin, Megan, Gialina, and Adriana of Oneonta; Kelli Morgan (Bill), Jacob, Rachel, and Jessica of Union Springs; Marc Johnson (Nikki), Dalton, Dakota, Dani, and Dalani of Guilford; Luke Johnson (Janette), Braeden and Xander of Unadilla; Joshua Johnson (Karli), Cole, Owen, and Willa of Otego; Derek Johnson (Erin), Logan, Bailey, and Sadie of Unadilla; and Kathryn Hitt (Diesel), Lane, Emma, Tori, and Levi of Adams Center.

Also surviving are two sisters: Judith Robertson (Richard) of Trumansburg, Patricia Gifford of Groton, and a brother, Clayton Gifford (Sandra) of Deposit. She was predeceased by her father and brother, William and Richard Gifford of Deposit. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to being survived by 23 loving grandchildren (listed above), Catherine leaves four great-grandchildren. She greatly enjoyed watching all of them play sports, dance, perform musicals, show registered Holsteins and work along side their parents on their own farms.

Calling hours will be private, as will burial at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla in the Johnson Family Plot, officiated by Rev. Lynn Shepard.

Memorial donations in Cathy’s name may be sent to the Unadilla First Presbyterian Church, Box Z, Unadilla, NY 13849 to fund the construction of a Stained Glass window in her honor, where she was a devoted member and spent many hours preparing food for church fundraising dinners.

A celebration of Cathy’s life and window dedication will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at a later date, with the Rev. Paul E.C. Hamilton officiating.

She put up a fight like no other we’ve seen or known. Amber would light up a room without even trying. Everyone just adores her and that smile, it would make anything better.

Amber grew up in Deposit and spent most her life there and some in Hancock until she moved out to Oklahoma with her husband and children.

She was very involved with all her children’s extra activities and school. Her number one thing in life was to make sure she was giving her children the best that she was able, she wants them to know no matter what their mommy is their number one fan and will always love them most! No matter what she was facing in life or how she was feeling she put on a brave face and participated. Being a mother was her greatest joy!

Some would say she lost a battle yet we define this as win, a great triumph! She earned her spot up there with the rest of our loved ones. She will always be here with us, watching and protecting all of us!

She is survived by her husband: David Farris and children: Mariah, Waylon, and Lexi; her mother: Rebecca Schmitt (Dennis); father:  Michael Schmitt (Tammy); sisters: Kashawna Anderson and Michelle Murphy; and so many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends she loved so dearly.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date when we can all gather again. There was a beautiful viewing and service done in her honor in Oklahoma.

She married Wayne Sexton on June 15, 1963. Together, they raised 4 children, which were Nancy’s pride and joy. She esteemed her role as wife and mother in the highest regard, and her love for her family was fierce and enduring.

Nancy will be remembered for her delicious apple pie, reading the Bible to her children and instilling a love for the Lord, her love for Christmas (and all the holidays) where she was with her beloved family, her knowledge of canning produce, hamburgers for breakfast...and one pesky lawn chair.

Nancy was pre-deceased by her parents, Isaac and Dorothy Jacobson, as well as her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Nadine Shaw.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Wayne and their children: Dave (Anita) Sexton, Dan (Melissa) Sexton, Jim (Brenda) Sexton and Cherry (Bob) Matthews, as well as her 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, all who held an extra-special place in her heart. Surviving also are her sister: Mary Kathleen Bradtke; brother-in-law: Tim (Rachel) Beers; cousins, nieces and nephews.

John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

Nancy is now home with her beloved Savior and friend, Jesus Christ. We will miss her presence here on Earth, but know we will see her again, for life eternal.

As were Nancy’s wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
