A. C. "Pete" Adams
A.C.
"Pete" Adams, son of Jeanette (Louden) and Albert
Minor Adams, passed away in
Crestview, Florida on August 11, 2010. His daughter, Debbie (Adams)
Dailey, who has so devotedly
attended to him in recent years, and
her family, were at his side.
Pete
was born in Cannonsville, NY, on April 22, 1918,
was a graduate of Deposit Central
High School, where he played football, basketball (co-captain of the
1937 championship team),
baseball and was president of his
senior class. He married his sweetheart, Pauline Hamblet, on October 15,
1939.
An
insurance agent for most of his career, Pete had
a hiatus as he followed his father
and grandfather (William B. Adams) as owner and operator of the Adams
General Store in
Cannonsville, from 1951-1959. During
that period, he also served for a time as Town of Tompkins Town Clerk
(as had his mother)
and, later, supervisor.
Due
to the impoundment of the west branch of the Delaware
River in the Cannonsville Valley,
Pete and his family moved to Beebe Hill, just beyond the Deposit village
limits, in 1959.
He re-purchased the Sarah Kelsey Insurance Agency at that time, which he had formerly bought from (Uncle) Charlie Adams
in 1939 and sold to Sarah Stiles, (later Kelsey), in 1942. Pete later incorporated the Vic Ruegger Insurance Agency
and served the Deposit area through the AC. "Pete" Adams Insurance Agency until his retirement in 1981.
Active
in Rotary International, the Deposit Masonic
Lodge and the First Baptist Church
of Deposit, Pete sang in several Rotary musicals and also in church
choirs. He and Pauline
hosted Deposit’s first American
Field Service student, Birgitta Wiggstrom, from Sweden, during the
1960-1961 school
year.
Pete
took great pride in creating and maintaining the
pristine look of his Adams Acres
property. He was also an avid supporter of DCHS athletics. Throughout
his life, Pete credited
his DCHS coach, Fred Fox, as well as
his father, for conveying to him what it is to be a hard-working,
dependable, honest
and generous-spirited member of
one’s community.
Pete
was predeceased by the love of his life, Pauline,
in 1992. Having lived in the
vicinity of Ft. Walton Beach, FL since 1988, he is survived by two
daughters, a son and their
families: Richard and Paula Adams
Jansen, Walden, NY, Daniel and Debra Adams Dailey, Crestview, FL and
Albert (M. Adams, II)and
Susan Coe Adams, San Francisco, CA,
as well as nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A
memorial service for family and friends in the Crestview
area, to celebrate the life of A.C.
Pete Adams, will be held on Thursday, August 19, 4:00 p.m., at Our Lady
of Victory Catholic
Church in Crestview Fl. A private
graveside service at the Hambletville Cemetery in Deposit, NY will take
place at a later
time. The family requests that
memorial contributions be made to the Pete and Pauline Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund
through the Deposit Educational Endowment Program (DEEP).
Life
is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid
torch which I have got hold of for
the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before
handing it on to
future generations.

special friends Bill and Jenny
Gould.
Justin
was born on September 21, 1922, to Marie Louise
(Sloat) Buchanan and Clements
Buchanan in Deposit. He was raised by his mother Marie Cuyle and
stepfather Clyde Cuyle.
He
graduated from the Deposit High School in 1941. While
there, he was voted best dresser and
dancer. He was an exceptional all around athlete, playing on
championship teams and was
a track record holder for many
years.
Following
high school he worked briefly at Bendix Aviation,
Sidney, NY and was accepted there as
a toolmaker apprentice. A veteran of the Second World War, he served in
the 113th Mechanized
Cavalry Unit of the United States
Army, saw duty in England, France, Belgium and Germany, and arrived on
Normandy Beach two
days after the invasion.
On
May 15, 1946 he married Isabelle Ruth Seymour of
Cannonsville, NY, in Deposit. For 11
years he worked as a pressman at the Deposit Courier and Printing
Company and then briefly
at The Binghamton Press. He then
learned the carpenter’s trade working on remodeling and house building.
Justin eventually
joined the Carpenter’s Union, where
he held numerous offices and was a member for 30 years. Always
industrious, he started
buying and remodeling Deposit homes
in the early 60’s which were turned into rental properties, eventually
becoming

As
a youth he caddied at Scott’s 18-hole golf
course at Oquaga Lake, could
actually swim the length of the lake, and often spoke of his lake
friends. He loved to dance
to the music of the 1940’s Big Band
era at the Johnson City Pavilion. He was an avid bowler and golfer and
was on several
championship teams. He was
passionate about his New York Yankees, stood by those NY Giants and was
an avid fan of the Syracuse
and Duke College basketball teams.
He
was even more passionate about his family; following
his children and grandchildren in
their many accomplishments, whether it be academics, athletics, artistic
or musical talents.
It
was difficult for him to give up the large post Civil
War house and property on Fourth
Street in Deposit, which he and Isabelle restored and groomed for the
last 42 years. He was
an energetic, competitive and a
common sense kind of man. Many friends were made over the years. He knew
the value of hard
work, provided for his family, was
faithful and steadfast in his marriage, conveyed his wisdom, and told

Leo
C. Cook
Leo
C. Cook, 73, entered into the presence of His Lord
early Monday morning, October 11,
after suffering a stroke while visiting his son and daughter-in-law in
Missouri. He always
wore a gold cross on a necklace and
he clung to it with intention as he passed; a gesture that symbolized
the essence of how
he lived his life. His faith in
Jesus Christ, the power of the cross, and the reality of the
resurrection were what gave him
direction and strength.
He
leaves his loving wife and best friend of almost
52 years, June (Wright) Cook; his
children Daniel William Cook (and daughter in-law Marie Cook, who went
to be with the Lord
April, 2008) of Liverpool, NY, David
Leo and Allyson (Paine) Cook of Harrisonville, MO and David and Dawn
(Cook) Nash
of Cazenovia, NY; grandchildren
Amanda Cook, Luke and Ty Cook, and Jacob and Noah Nash; a brother Claude
R. Cook and a sister,
Elsie Arcury.
Mr.
Cook was born in Walton, NY on January 10, 1937,
to Leo C. and Dorothy (Schlafer)
Cook. He grew up in Hancock and graduated in the Hancock Central High
School Class of 1954.
He attended Cornell University on an
ROTC Scholarship and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in
Agricultural Economics.
He spent the next two years in the
US Army at Ft. Benning, GA, and received an Honorable Discharge in 1960
as a First Lieutenant.
He retired
from Agway Inc. after 35 years of successful
business management.
He
and his wife built their dream home on Island Lake
where he enjoyed his morning walks
through the woods with his dog and spent hours fishing on the lake. It
was in those quiet
moments that God spoke deeply to his
heart and he often shared some tidbit of wisdom that he had learned
from God’s
creation. He was a man who could
enjoy the solitude of those quiet moments but also a man who loved
people and made friends
easily.
The
Cooks became active, loyal members of the Deposit
community. It was their love for God
and the people of Deposit that birthed the vision of Deposit’s Closet.
He
was an active member of the Deposit Rotary Club,
the Scott Rod and Gun Club, and the
Shehawken Methodist Church, where he often filled in for the pastor.
He
was an avid, lifetime New York Yankees and New York
Giants fan, and a 25-year season
ticket holder for Syracuse Orangemen football, but all of that took a
back row seat to his
grandsons’ football, basketball,
lacrosse and rodeo events or Amanda’s musical performances.
Calling
hours will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October
21, at the Shehawken, Methodist
Church, Shehawken, PA, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at the
church. Following
the service there will be a lunch
served at Leo and June’s home, on Island Lake, 30 Old Boat Road,

Helen
Watrous
Helen
Ann Eichorst Watrous was almost born in the apple
orchard on September 30, 1918 while
her mother, Anna Eichorst, was harvesting the fall crop. She was a
first-generation American
born to German immigrant parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eichorst in Middle Grove, NY. She grew up on the farm
she was born on.
Helen was the 3rd of 8 children, the
oldest daughter.
She
left home and moved to Saratoga Springs to work
in a clothing factory where she
sewed lingerie. She was encouraged to further her education and went to
cosmetology school,
and continued to work as a
beautician for almost 40 years.
She
moved to Deposit shortly after getting her cosmetology
license and worked with Elsie
Weidman for a number of years. In Deposit she met the man she would
marry. Helen and Ozzie Watrous
married on June 10, 1945 and left
for their honeymoon on an Indian motorcycle with gifts of gas rationing
coupons.
They
set up a home in Deposit and purchased their house
on Court Street in 1946, where Helen
lived until August of 2007. She was a well known seamstress and
beautician who had her
shop in her home, ready to offer a
sandwich and cup of tea to a lady still under the drier at lunchtime.
Ozzie
and Helen were members of the First Baptist Church
of Deposit for many years, where
Helen taught the junior high boys’ Sunday School class and served as a
deaconess. In
1966 they became members of the
Hancock Baptist Church, and Helen remained a member until her death.
Helen
loved her sewing, gardening and flowers and was
known as a wonderful cook, always
ready to share with her neighbors what came out of the oven. She enjoyed
serving at the
voting polls in Deposit and would
discuss politics with anyone. She had fond memories of the boys she
instructed in reading
at Camp Brace. She worked in her
yard, raked her own leaves and swept snow off the steps until she moved
to Virginia at the
age of 89, where she lived with her
daughter, Marilyn, and her family.
One
of her most treasured memories was of her trip to
Hawaii with Ozzie for their 25th
wedding anniversary. She had many wonderful memories of her marriage to
Ozzie and the home
they shared on Court Street until
his death in 1998. Each of her neighbors held a special place in her
heart as they blessed
her with kindnesses that allowed her
to remain in the home she loved for over 61 years.
Helen
will be missed by the many friends and family
members she leaves behind. Her
friends from Hancock Baptist were a much loved source of strength and
support for her after
Ozzie’s death.

was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and
Anna Eichorst; three brothers:
Alfred, Edward and Louis Jr.; an infant daughter Nancy Alice; an infant
grandson Stephen Watrous;
a beloved daughter-in-law Carol
Winans Watrous; and her husband of over 53 years James Albert "Ozzie"
