God grant that I may live,

And when it comes to my

When in the Lord’s safe

That in his mercy I be judged,
As good enough to keep.

Gleason
Clark Judd
“Mr. Judd” to hundreds of students,
“Coach” to scores of football and baseball players, “Uncle Juddy” to nieces and
nephews, and “Gleas” or “Silver Chief” to his many friends. Just don’t call him
“Scrubby.…”
Gleas died peacefully in his sleep
at Chestnut Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta on July 21, 2013,
where he was rehabilitating from a hospital stay.
He was born in
Tompkins on Aug. 16, 1924. He was a graduate of Deposit Central School Class of
1943.
His dry wit was on display to the
last: a day or two before he died, he remarked “I’m making progress — I grew up
on Chestnut Point (his family’s name for the location of their Cannonsville
home), and I’ve made it all the way to Chestnut Park!”
Gleas is survived by Dorothy, his
wife of 60 years; his sons, Greg and Dennis; his daughters-in-law, Teresa and
Mary; and his grandsons, Nick and Gleason.
After their marriage in 1953, Gleas
and Dot lived in Norwich, Afton and Cannonsville, before settling down for many
years in Bainbridge, where Gleas, a graduate of Ithaca College, taught science
at Greenlawn Elementary to a couple of generations of area children, and
coached a few dozen football and baseball
teams, whose athletes learned just how fun their chosen sports could be
when played right.
A veteran of
the Army Air Forces,
Gleas was active for
several years in the American Legion — when he wasn’t swatting golf balls
around local courses (did he have 3 holes in one, or 4?), or rolling bowling
balls in area leagues, or simply spending time with his wife and children,
family and friends.
A memorial Mass is planned for St.
John’s Roman Catholic Church, 32 Main St., Bainbridge at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug.
17. Family and friends are invited to remember Gleas at the Mass, and/or at a
memorial gathering that same day at the American Legion Hall on 22 Union St. in
Sidney from 1 to 3 p.m.
Family and friends are making donations,
in lieu of flowers, payable to American Legion Post 806, care of Richard
Rusakiewicz, 86 W. Main St., Bainbridge, NY 13733.

he pressed and sold apple cider, planted and sold Christmas trees and made and
sold Christmas wreaths.
In 1976, he worked at Indian Country
Inc, a family owned business, with his father, brothers Frank, Tom and John.
The family took over the business from their father in 1986, until it was sold
in 2005. Gerard and John bought the plant back in 2007 and changed the name to
Integrated Wood Components Inc, where they worked side by side, until his

John A. McMahon (Jack)
John
Albert McMahon (Jack), 91, formerly of Starlight, PA., passed on September 15th
at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Milwaukee WI. He died of natural causes. Jack
was born In Chicago on Feb. 16, 1922 to the late Albert and Cecilia McMahon.
Early
in his childhood it became apparent that he had a beautiful singing voice. At
the age of seven ‘Little Jackie McMahon’ had his own 15-minute radio program
and sang at his father’s political rallies.
McMahon
moved the family to California after his mother died and his father suffered a
stroke. Jack became the sole wage-earner, dropping out of ninth grade.
His Irish tenor voice had matured and he began to study voice and music.
McMahon worked for the Heyward Deverage Agency in Hollywood, where he suffered
a terrible motorcycle accident, leaving him with a crippled right leg. In spite
of his handicap, McMahon acquired jobs in local opera companies and sang with a
trio in night clubs.
Performing
became a fulltime career.
As
a member of the Voices of Walter Schumann, McMahon toured with Charles
Laughton’s adaptation of John Brown’s Body, starring Judith Anderson, Raymond
Massey and Tyrone Power, culminating in a Broadway run. His work in New York
included the Metropolitan Opera chorus in Lohengrin, Radio City Music Hall
chorus and the Robert Shaw Chorale.
He
taught himself guitar, developed his own act, and performed in various clubs in
the city. In 1962 he was in the off-Broadway revival of John Brown’s Body,
where he met Judy Ebert who became his wife.
Jack
needed a more ‘reliable’ way to make a living for his growing family. He got a
call from a friend who told him that there was a job for a recording engineer
at Mercury Records in NYC. As engineer, he worked with such influential people
as Quincy Jones, Nina Simone and John Denver, and ended up running the studio.
In the early 70s, many of the big studios closed and McMahon decided to look
for another type of work. The family had now grown to four children. He
became the innkeeper at The Inn At Starlight Lake and ran it with wife Judy for
over 30 years.
Jack
is survived by his former wife, Judy, of Binghamton NY, children Ceal Hunter
and husband Tim of Milwaukee WI., Will and wife Carina of Seattle WA., John and
wife Julie of NYC, Patty McMahon of Phil. PA, granddaughters Sheila and Annie
Hunter, brother Jim and wife Rosie of New Bern, NC, sister Patricia of
Camarillo, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A
man of many talents, Jack took on whatever came his way, whether it was singing
a high C, playing guitar, photography, sound engineering, signmaking,
bartending - the list goes on. He loved a good cup of coffee, gin martinis (had
to be made just so), opera, folk music, and jazz. He encouraged his children to
pursue higher education, which he never had a chance to do. He was an
autodidact, constantly reading, following current events, politics, literature
and history. He was a good friend, and if even a stranger needed help in any
way, Jack was there to provide it. He once served as president of the Hancock
NY Rotary Club. His good ear, wit and wisdom will be missed. A
memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Nancy Boyd Tickel
Nancy B. Tickel of Langhorne died on May 7, 2013 at St. Mary Hospital
surrounded by her loving family and friends. Nancy was born and raised in Cannonsville, NY, a small town now buried under
a failed reservoir for NYC’s drinking water because of the high phosphorous content of the water. She is a graduate
of Deposit Central High School in Deposit, NY and Miami University in Oxford, OH.
Nancy was raised on a dairy farm in Cannonsville, N.Y., which was nestled
in the beautiful foothills of the Catskills where she attended a one-room school house, learned to milk cows, ride horses,
shoot a gun, and box with her boyfriends. As a young girl she could be seen driving her pony and buggy around the countryside
and through the town with her pigtails flying behind her. Later on, she owned horses named Trixy and Blaze. Blaze was sired
by Gene Autry’s horse Champion. Nancy was an accomplished equestrian, winning championships at fairs in upstate New
York.
As Nancy grew older she began attending nearby Camp Hill Top where she
made many lifetime friends. Her camp experience was so meaningful to her that she became a camp counselor after her camping
days were finished. At camp, Nancy learned to sing, amongst many songs John Jacob Jingle Hymer Schmidt, which she later sang
to her elementary students. She loved camp so much that she made it possible for her own children and then her grandchildren
to go to the same camp.
In 1954 she chose Miami University over Cornell and some other eastern
schools because, as she said, “there were so many good-looking boys there who said hello to this pimply-faced girl from
upstate New York.” After class one day in 1956, she made the mistake of entering the College Inn where David C. Tickel
was listening to the Campus Owls’ music and playing a pin-ball machine. As she passed the pin-ball machine she pulled
the plunger back and that was the beginning of a 57 year relationship. They were married on July 2, 1960 in the Deposit Baptist
Church.
After college and a couple of moves in the New Jersey and Philadelphia
areas, Nancy began teaching in the Pennsbury School System. She taught for 18 years at Edgewood and 5 years at Quarry Hill
Elementary School. Many of her students still remember her Tickel Town economics simulation, and her asking one of her students
if they wanted a special tickle, then taking that student on her lap and singing “Baby Face” to them. Nancy was
always very positive to her students and life situations and she brought boundless
energy and enthusiasm to everything she did.
In later years she and Dave began
golfing and joined the Yardley Country Club where they made many friends. Nancy especially enjoyed the tournaments
and the member-guests because they brought together so many good friends. Nancy has lamented many times to her inability to
play golf because the leukemia had robbed her of the strength to play the game. In spite of her health problems, she managed
to play 18 holes at Yardley Country Club three weeks before she died.
Nancy and Dave were very active alumni supporters of Miami University
of Ohio. She served on various reunion committees, attended many sports events, and served on the board of the Redhawk Red
& White booster club. Dave serves as his class of ‘60 agent and both were named “Distinguished Alumni”
by Miami in 2009.
Nancy has always served the community in which she finds herself. She
was the president of her high school student senate. In the beloved community known as United Christian Church, she
served as an Elder, a Sunday school teacher and the outreach coordinator of the church board. She served the community of
Bucks County as one of the founders of the Bucks County Committee for Interracial
Harmony: she is a lifetime member of the NAACP, and served on its local board. She is a member of the Levittown AAUW, and
most recently served on the board of the Peace Center. And, that pimply-faced girl who fell in love with the young men of
Miami University was chosen as the Queen of the Valentine’s Dinner-Dance of the Eta Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority
in 1964. Nancy was very loyal to her friends and the organizations she belonged to and faithfully attended meetings and was
an active participant in the affairs of each.
Nancy loved teaching, Miami University, golf, and the family gatherings
in New York and Ohio: she particularly enjoyed the one week family vacation at Scott’s Oquaga Lake House in upstate
New York. She loved to make new friends and to relate to people from every station of life. She had an uncanny knack for remembering
names and specifics about other people's lives. She did not see color or dwell on the negative characteristics of people.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth A. and Leland B. Boyd,
of Deposit, N.Y., by her sister Isabel Boyd Wagner of Cleveland, OH, a brother, Berkley S. Boyd of Mclean, VA., and three
wonderful family dogs named, Bitsey, Shotgun and Bouncer.
She is survived by her loving husband, David C. Tickel of Langhorne,
PA; a brother, attorney Robert A. Boyd of Binghamton, N.Y; a son, David L. Tickel of Morrisville and a daughter Ruth Anne
Tickel/Logan and her husband David E. Logan of Yardley, PA who gave Nancy and Dave three beautiful granddaughters, Briana,
Angeline and Haily Logan.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of life service at
United Christian Church at 8525 New Falls Road in Levittown, PA on Saturday, May 25 at 3:00 p.m. Ex-students and those inspired
by Mrs. Tickel are asked to make themselves known to the Tickel family.
Contributions in memory of Nancy may be sent to The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society, PO Box 9031, Pittsfield, MA 01202 and/or to The Peace Center, 102 W. Maple Ave., Langhorne,
PA 19047.

“Cile” and “Vin” lived most
of their married life in Chenango Bridge, NY. They took their vacations on the back of their “Harley Hog” to New England, Nova Scotia, and Florida for many years, and for even longer loved their membership
in the Square Deal Riders Motorcycle Club of Binghamton, NY. They enjoyed many summer weekends at the horse races at Finger
Lakes near Ithaca, NY. After Vin died Cile carried on alone in their familiar home, becoming the little old lady who drove
all the other little old ladies around to lunch. She visited frequently with her brother
and nephew Dana in Bainbridge. In 2005, when she could no longer drive, she left
her beloved Chenango Bridge and moved to Columbia, SC to be near her son and his wife Rhea, and her grandson Branden.
Lucile’s life was an ongoing trial for her, yet
she made the best of it, courageous, feisty, and determined through the end. The last people to witness that were the staff
of Oakleaf Village in Lexington, SC, where she had lived since March 2012. Their caring and respect for her were remarkable,
and are deeply appreciated by those who witnessed it. At the end, Heartstrings Hospice was providing especially appropriate
guidance and comfort to her and her family.
