Spending time with his family and friends was one of his greatest joys, especially spending time with his grandparents walking through the woods, golfing, watching a good movie, or just hanging out together. But by far his greatest joy is being in Heaven with his Savior, Jesus Christ. Although Daniel was well loved and will be missed by all, his testimony and his relationship with Jesus will live on in the lives of many.

Stuart Wilson Was Children's Center Benefactor

Stuart Wilson died peacefully at home, with family, on 17 December, 2009 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was born on March 8, 1916 to Stuart Strong Wilson and Elisabeth Lawrence (Whittemore) Wilson in Binghamton, NY, and grew up in Deposit, NY.

In 1927, at age 11, he travelled three days alone by train to Arizona, to stay on his uncle George Wilson’s ranch, and attend school in Oracle. In his early years there he learned to ride and rope, speak Spanish, play the guitar and sing Mexican cowboy songs, all of which became lifelong passions. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy for his last two years of high school, graduating in 1934; and then Yale University, graduating with honors in 1938 with a bachelor’s degree in English and economics.

He served in ROTC at Yale, and was in the Army Reserves after college. In August 1941 Stuart reported for active duty at Ft. Bragg, NC, as part of the 112th Field Artillery, the last horse drawn field artillery unit in the Army. On Thanksgiving Day, 1942, he married Jeanne Hallam at the Post Chapel in Fort Sill, OK. He served in Belgium, France and Germany during the Second World War.

He returned to Deposit in 1946, working for - and eventually taking over - his father’s company, Delaware Mills, Inc. He was the last surviving charter member of the Deposit Rotary Club, which he helped found in 1947.

A man of many interests and talents, he pursued many other passions along with work. He was an avid field archer, president of the New York State Field Archery Association for a time, who, with his wife, built a 56-target field archery course on his property, where they hosted a number of tournaments. He was a bow hunter, flyfisherman and all-around woodsman who could name every tree and most of the woodland flowers.

He became a mycologist, eating upwards of 100 different varieties of wild mushrooms. He acted in community theater, and sang in the chorus of the Tri-Cities Opera as well as playing the guitar and performing minor stage roles in a few of their productions. He served on the board of the TCO for many years.

He pursued his keen interest in birds to a greater length than most, becoming a certified bird bander. His detailed records are now in the possession of the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology, where they have become the subject of intense interest and research. Among other professions, Stuart was an occasional paid farrier.

He was a great lover of the woods, and in addition to being a landowner in the Catskills, in Deposit, was a member and eventual property owner of the Adirondack League Club from 1936 to the present, as well as owning a hunting camp in the more northern Adirondacks, near Cranberry Lake.

Later in life, walking more slowly and hunched over, he became fascinated by - and therefore became an expert in - ferns and rocks. He spoke Spanish fluently, along with passable French, Italian and German. A lover of words, he could - and often did - quote lengthy poems in several languages, and one of his amusements in the final years of life was to learn new poetry.

In 2003 he donated $125,000 to help fund The Wilson Children's Center in Deposit which enabled the Center to begin operation.

In the spring of 2004, Stuart moved to Boulder, CO, to live with his daughter. He is survived by his three children, Stuart Strong Wilson, III of Atlanta (and his wife Judy Wilson), Katharine Strong Wilson of Boulder, and Clyde Hallam Wilson of Seattle (and his wife, Kathleen Mortimer Wilson); his sister, Nancy MacLean Wilson of Haverford, PA; his nephew, Calvin Axtell Byles of Denver (and his wife, Patricia Wagner); his niece, Marcy Byles Ayanian of Los Angeles; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased in 1998 by his wife of 55 years, Jeanne Hallam Wilson.

The family is planning a memorial celebration later this year in New York State. Contributions in Stuart’s honor may be made to the Tri-Cities Opera, Jeanne H. and Stuart S. Wilson Memorial Fund, 315 Clinton St., Binghamton, NY 13905.

Edward Zandt, 63, of Harpursville, NY, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, has died after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sharon, his daughter Cheryl and son-in-law Michael Weinstein of Washington, DC, his daughter Sara and her partner Bernie Kolenda, and his grandson Joshua of Thompson, PA. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters and their families; Ernest Zandt, Hans and Helen Zandt, August Jr. and Rachael Zandt, Robert and Diana Zandt, Hedwig Koelle, Helen Tuttle, Margaret and Gary Warner, his sisters in law Dorothy Zandt and Beverly Zandt, his in-laws and their families Sandra Tuttle, Marvin Schloss, Roxanne and Leon Decker, Elivia and Dan Graves, and his cousins and their families Hanneli and Wilhelm Mayer, Verena and Herman Dieterle, Fred and Hedy Manzke, Richard and Helene Manzke, and Ruth Malatino. He is predeceased by his parents August and Hedwig and his siblings Charles, George, and Rosa. He was a loving family man who took pleasure in hosting a large annual reunion in addition to numerous smaller events. He savored quiet time and fun times with his wife and children and had a great time taking them on vacations and traveling the world with his beloved wife Sharon. Ed loved being outdoors working with his John Deere tractors, hunting with his friends, and working with Sharon on their farm and in their gardens. His life of faith and service to the church was very dear to him. He served as president of United Methodist Men for the Wyoming Annual Conference, helped communities rebuild after floods both locally and on the Gulf Coast as a member of the Wyoming Conference disaster response team, and was a member of the board of United Methodist Homes. He also was active in his congregation at North Fenton. He served in the US Army, was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he was badly wounded in combat, and was proud to have served his country. His service continued in his career of defense contracting that spanned IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin in Owego, NY where he contributed to projects such as the B2 stealth aircraft. He was known as a favored colleague with a near-photographic memory for project details and incredible dedication to his work. He quietly shared his gifts and time with many and delighted in making others happy.
